Crossword Genius

Silly Republican in daft clothing? (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

drippy

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'silly' is the definition.
Both the answer and definition are adjectives. Maybe they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'republican in daft clothing?' is the wordplay.
'republican in' becomes 'drip' (I can't explain this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'daft' becomes 'potty' (I've seen this in another clue).
'clothing?' suggests removing the centre (I've seen 'clothing' mean this).
'potty' with its middle taken out is 'py'.
'drip'+'py'='DRIPPY'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for drippy that I've seen before include "wet" , "Sloppily sentimental" , "Mawkish - leaking?" , "Would a slow leak be" , "silly?" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
