Crossword Genius

Slithy character burying Romeo’s valuable collection (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

trove

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'valuable collection' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'slithy character burying romeo's' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'character' could be 'v' and 'v' is found in the answer.
'romeo' could be 'r' (phonetic alphabet: alpha, bravo, charlie etc.) and 'r' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'toe' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for trove that I've seen before include "Treasure stash" , "Overt (anag)" , "Store of valuables" , "Valuable collection" , "Pirates' treasure?" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
