Slowly taking in writer with flashy stuff (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

nibbling

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'slowly taking in' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I don't understand how one could define the other.

'writer with flashy stuff' is the wordplay.
'writer' becomes 'nib' (something which writes).
'with' says to put letters next to each other.
'flashy stuff' becomes 'bling' (informal term for jewellery).
'nib'+'bling'='NIBBLING'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for nibbling that I've seen before include "Taking small bites" , "Leather strip in shoe; thrash" , "having little taste" , "Biting off very small pieces" , "Gently biting at (something)" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Times.
