Crossword Genius

Small whale a little lower (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

calf

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This clue might be a double definition.

'small whale' is the first definition.
'calf' can be an answer for 'whale' (I have seen 'Young whale ' mean 'calf' so perhaps 'whale' could also mean 'calf'). I am not sure about the 'small' bit.

'a little lower' is the second definition.
(I've seen this before)

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for calf that I've seen before include "Young animal - part of leg" , "Young animal; part of body" , "Animal that yields veal" , "Baby cow" , "Young moo-er" .)

I've seen this clue in The Sun.
