Crossword Genius

Smith’s property, one figures (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

anvil

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'smith's property' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both man-made objects as well as being singular nouns.
Perhaps there's a link between them I don't understand?

'one figures' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'one' could be 'an' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'an' is found within the answer.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for anvil that I've seen before include "Alvin (anag.)" , "Bone" , "bit off one's ear" , "Block for hammering" , "Block on which metals are hammered" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
