Crossword Genius

South-eastern area with channel showing 'Coast' (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

seaside

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'coast' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'south-eastern area with channel' is the wordplay.
'south eastern' becomes 'se'.
'area' becomes 'a' (maths abbreviation).
'with' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'channel' becomes 'side' (I can't explain this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'se'+'a'+'side'='SEASIDE'

'showing' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for seaside that I've seen before include "holiday location" , "Disease (anag) -- coast" , "Popular resort area" , "Coastal region" , "Beach location" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
