I believe the answer is:

rocket

'spaceship' is the definition.
(thesaurus)

'alien lands on gibraltar?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'alien' could be 'et' (extra terrestrial) and 'et' is located in the answer.
'gibraltar?' could be 'rock' (I've seen this in another clue) and 'rock' is present in the answer.
No letters remain.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for rocket that I've seen before include "A slangy reprimand or a firework" , "High speed steam engine (1829)" , "Firework and salad ingredient" , "that should take off?" , "Severe criticism" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
