Spent money on things like free-range eggs (4,3)

laid out

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'spent' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'money on things like free-range eggs' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'money' could be 'l' (L can mean 'pounds') and 'l' is present in the answer.
'free' could be 'out' (I've seen this before) and 'out' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'aid' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for laid out that I've seen before include "Displayed; knocked senseless" , "Dispatched boxer perhaps" , "Paid" , "KO'd" , "prepared for burial" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
