Crossword Genius

Spooner's second newlywed produce platitudes (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

bromides

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'platitudes' is the definition.
('bromide' can be a synonym of 'platitude')

'spooner's second newlywed' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'second' could be 's' (common abbreviation) and 's' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'bromide' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'produce' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Another definition for bromides that I've seen is " boring types".)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
