I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'spring' could be 'well' (both can mean a source of water) and 'well' is present in the answer.
'put' could be 'position' (positioning is a kind of putting) and 'position' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'ed' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
