Crossword Genius

Squirrels away from trees leaving partial nests (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

stashes

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'squirrels away' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'trees leaving partial nests' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'trees' could be 'ashes' (ash is a kind of tree) and 'ashes' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'st' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'from' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for stashes that I've seen before include "Hidden supplies or stores" , "Secret stores" .)

I've seen this clue in The Daily Express.
