Crossword Genius

Stand or fall with the party that's returned (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

tripod

'stand' is the definition.
(I know that tripod is a type of tripod)

'fall with the party that's returned' is the wordplay.
'fall' becomes 'trip' (as in tripping over).
'with' says to put letters next to each other.
'the party' becomes 'do' (do can informally mean a party).
'that's returned' shows that the letters should be reversed in order.
'do' in reverse letter order is 'od'.
'trip'+'od'='TRIPOD'

'or' is the link.

(Other definitions for tripod that I've seen before include "one appears to have three legs!" , "Something on three legs" , "Stand on three legs" , "oral test at school" , "Three-legged support" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
