Statistical processing less responsive on specific form of consumption (6,9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

number crunching

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'statistical processing' is the definition.
'number crunching' can be an answer for 'processing' (I've seen this before). I'm not sure about the 'statistical' bit.

'less responsive on specific form of consumption' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'form' could be 'be' (form can mean to be or constitute) and 'be' is found in the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for number crunching that I've seen before include "accounting task" , "Calculation" , "performing fast calculations" , "Processing" , "doing many operations" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
