Sun almost gone when it rains? (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

monsoon

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'rains?' is the definition.
(thesaurus)

'sun almost gone when it' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'sun' could be 's' (abbreviation) and 's' is located in the answer.
'when' could be 'on' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'on' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'moon' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for monsoon that I've seen before include "Seasonal wind and rain in S Asia" , "Seasonal Asian wind" , "Asian wind; rainy season" , "Wild weather" , "Season of heavy rain" .)

I've seen this clue in The Daily Express.
