Crossword Genius

Ross

I believe the answer is:

stand up to

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'fight' is the definition.
Both the definition and answer are verbs in their base form.
Perhaps they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'supporter strong enough for' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'for' could be 'to' (eg both can mean 'in the opinion of') and 'to' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'standup' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for stand up to that I've seen before include "Resist person courageously - get off your knees" , "Resist (someone)" , "Brave" .)

I've seen this clue in The Daily Express.
