irritant

't' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't understand how they can define each other.

'rarity almost affected g for one' is the wordplay.
'almost' means to remove the last letter (almost the whole word is kept).
'affected' indicates anagramming the letters.
'g' becomes 'nt' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'for' says to put letters next to each other (I've seen this in other clues).
'one' becomes 'i' (Roman numeral).
'rarity' with its final letter taken off is 'rarit'.
'rarit' with letters rearranged gives 'rrita'.
'rrita'+'nt'='rritant'
'rritant' after 'i' is 'IRRITANT'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for irritant that I've seen before include "distraction" , "Something that chafes or annoys" , "Trouble" , "Something that causes annoyance and bad temper" , "Source of continual annoyance" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
