Crossword Genius

Take a look at the aristocrat! (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

peer

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'the aristocrat' is the definition.
(peer is a kind of aristocrat)

'take a look' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'take' could be 'r' (abbreviation for 'recipe', Latin for 'take') and 'r' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'pee' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'at' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for peer that I've seen before include "Peep; nobleman" , "Coequal" , "Equal - match" , "One entitled" , "Look; earl" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
