Crossword Genius

Taking part temporarily (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

acting

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'taking' is the definition.
Both the answer and definition are adjectives. Perhaps there's a link between them I don't understand?

'part temporarily' is the wordplay.
'part' becomes 'act' (I have seen 'Part of play ' mean 'act' so perhaps 'part' could also mean 'act').
'temporarily' becomes 'ing' (I can't explain this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'act'+'ing'='ACTING'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for acting that I've seen before include "Performing or standing in for another" , "Filling a role on a temporary basis" , "Performing, behaving" , "Cruise will do it" , "Temporary - work as a thespian" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail and The Guardian.
