Crossword Genius

Team ends up even below the Spanish (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

eleven

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'team' is the definition.
(I know that eleven is a type of team)

'even below the spanish' is the wordplay.
'below' means one lot of letters go next to another (in a down clue, some letters go below others).
'the spanish' becomes 'el' ('the' in Spanish).
'even' put after 'el' is 'ELEVEN'.

'ends up' acts as a link.
I am not very happy about this link. Some or all of it may be part of another bit of the clue.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for eleven that I've seen before include "Sporting side" , "Age to start secondary education" , "Cardinal" , "Cricket 18" , "'Legs' bingo number" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
