Crossword Genius

Tearful Scottish scenes we get on Christmas cards (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

greetings

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'tearful scottish scenes' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both related to communication as well as being plural nouns.
Maybe there's a link between them I don't understand?

'we get on christmas cards' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'on' could be 're' ('on' can be mean 'with reference to') and 're' is located in the answer.
'get' could be 'getin' (getting in is a kind of getting) and 'getin' is found within the remaining letters.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for greetings that I've seen before include "Salutations" , "Expressions of goodwill on meeting" , "Welcomes; regards" , "Kind of card" , "Words of welcome" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
