Crossword Genius

The Antarctic Ocean? (4,5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

deep south

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'the antarctic' is the definition.
The answer and definition can be both locations as well as being singular nouns.
Perhaps they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'ocean?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'ocean?' could be 'deep' (I've seen this in another clue) and 'deep' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'south' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for deep south that I've seen before include "Region including Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana" , "part of America" , "part of US" .)

I've seen this clue in The Sun.
