Crossword Genius

The endless invasion of a solitary Irish location (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

athlone

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'irish location' is the definition.
I don't know anything about this answer so I cannot tell whether this works.

'the endless invasion of a solitary' is the wordplay.
'the endless invasion of' becomes 'ath' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'a solitary' becomes 'lone' (I've seen this before).
'ath'+'lone'='ATHLONE'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for athlone that I've seen before include "location in Ireland" , "Irish city" , "The loan of a town here" , "Irish town; an hotel (anag.)" , "Town on River Shannon" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
