Crossword Genius

The humble person set out to get right to the fore (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

servant

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'the humble person' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both people as well as being singular nouns.
Perhaps there's an association between them I don't understand?

'set out to get right to the fore' is the wordplay.
'out' means to remove the last letter.
'to get right' becomes 'r' (I've seen this in other clues).
'to the fore' becomes 'vant' (I am not sure about this - if you are sure you should believe this answer much more).
'set' with its final letter removed is 'se'.
'se'+'r'+'vant'='SERVANT'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for servant that I've seen before include "barmaid, for instance" , "One working for another" , "(Esp. domestic) employee" , "Vest ran (anag)" , "Eg, a footman or maid" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
