Those in league with each other? (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

clubs

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'each other?' is the definition.
I can't judge whether this defines the answer.

'those in league' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'league' could be 'l' (abbreviation) and 'l' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'cubs' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'with' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for clubs that I've seen before include "black suit" , "discos" , "cabarets" , "Card suit" , "woods, for example" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
