Time to face creature, semi-aquatic adder? (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

totter

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'adder?' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'time to face creature semi-aquatic' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'time' could be 't' (abbreviation) and 't' is found within the answer.
'creature' could be 'otter' (I've seen this before) and 'otter' is located in the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for totter that I've seen before include "Walk unsteadily - nearly fall" , "Stagger, reel" , "Maybe a mathematician" , "rock" , "adder?" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
