Crossword Genius

Tip of a plant? (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

shoot

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'a plant?' is the definition.
The answer and definition can be both plants as well as being singular nouns.
Maybe there's an association between them I don't understand?

'tip of' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'of' could be 'o' and 'o' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'shot' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for shoot that I've seen before include "Kill; part of plant" , "modelling session" , "Pump full of lead" , "Make a film" , "Use a gun; film" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
