Crossword Genius

Tow back and charge (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

ward

'charge' is the definition.
(both can mean a child in one's care)

'tow back' is the wordplay.
'tow' becomes 'draw'.
'back' says the letters should be written backwards.
'draw' in reverse letter order is 'WARD'.

'and' is the link.

(Other definitions for ward that I've seen before include "Hospital room; part of borough" , "number of patients" , "zone for votes" , "Hospital unit" , "custody" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
