Tremble, with awful danger in picturesque area (4,6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

rock garden

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'area' is the definition.
(rock garden is a kind of area)

'tremble with awful danger in picturesque' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
an anagram of 'danger' is 'garden' which is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'rock' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Another definition for rock garden that I've seen is " horticultural feature".)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
