Crossword Genius

Trial judges ingenuine? (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

rehearsal

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'trial' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'judges ingenuine?' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'judges' could be 'hears' (as in to hear a court case) and 'hears' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'real' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for rehearsal that I've seen before include "show trial" , "Practice session in preparation for public performance" , "Drill" , "Play run-through" , "Practice - run-through" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
