Crossword Genius

Vincent displays good bearing (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

gene

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'vincent' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'good bearing' is the wordplay.
'good' becomes 'gen' (I am not sure about this - if you are sure you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'bearing' becomes 'e' (East, a compass bearing or direction).
'gen'+'e'='GENE'

'displays' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for gene that I've seen before include "- - Kelly, dancer" , "Factor controlling heredity carried by chromosome" , "Something got from parent < for boy" , "and 16 Down: Rockabilly singer" , "-- Pitney, singer" .)

I've seen this clue in The Sun.
