Violated character in ‘Twelfth Night’? (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

viola

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'violated character' is the definition.
'viola' can be an answer for 'character' (I have seen 'Shakespearean character' mean 'viola' so perhaps 'character' could also mean 'viola'). I am not sure about the 'violated' bit.

I don't understand how the remainder of the clue works.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for viola that I've seen before include "Instrument slightly larger than violin and of lower pitch" , "String instrument of a range between the violin and cello" , "Flower -- stringed instrument" , "Twelfth Night heroine" , "Pansy-like plant" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
