Crossword Genius

Visitor ran into revolting eggs (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

meteor

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'visitor' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot understand how they can define each other.

'ran into revolting eggs' is the wordplay.
'ran into' becomes 'met' (I've seen this in another clue).
'revolting' says the letters should be written backwards.
'eggs' becomes 'roe' (I've seen this before).
'roe' written backwards gives 'eor'.
'met'+'eor'='METEOR'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for meteor that I've seen before include "Body falling from space" , "it appears as a streak of light" , "extraterrestrial debris" , "Remote type of heavenly body" , "Component of shower" .)

I've seen this clue in The Hindu.
