I don't understand how the remainder of the clue works.

(Other definitions for slav that I've seen before include "European perhaps" , "eg a Pole" , "East European - Asian Russian" , "A Russian, say" , "Native of eastern Europe or northwestern Asia" .)

I've seen this clue in the Independent.
