eggshells

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'what the young birds are bound to discard' is the definition.
I can't tell whether this defines the answer.

'example? inflatable suits found on a beach' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'example?' could be 'eg' (short for 'exempli gratia', 'for example' in Latin) and 'eg' is located in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'for' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for eggshells that I've seen before include "Tip-toe gently like walking on ........." , "See 1" , "They're hard to hold yolks" , "Walk delicately as if on these" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Times and the Irish Times (Crosaire).
