Crossword Genius

Where barristers practise drinking (2,3,3)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

at the bar

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'practise drinking' is the definition.
I don't know anything about this answer so I can't tell whether this works.

'where barristers' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'barristers' could be 'thebar' (term for the legal profession) and 'thebar' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'at' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Another definition for at the bar that I've seen is " "Prisoner _______ "".)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
