Ross

I believe the answer is:

ermine

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'setter' is the definition.
The answer and definition can be both animals as well as being singular nouns.
Perhaps you can see a link between them that I don't see?

'winter coat oddly neglected wear belonging to' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'belonging to' could be 'in' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'in' is found within the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for ermine that I've seen before include "Fur trimming on royal robes" , "Fur-bearing mammal" , "Warm white covering" , "In mere strange fur" , "White fur of weasel" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
