Ross

I believe the answer is:

trees

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'wood is sometimes' is the definition.
I can't judge whether this defines the answer.

'said to hide them from view' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'said' could be 't' (I've seen this in other clues) and 't' is found within the answer.
'from' could be 'e' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'e' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'res' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for trees that I've seen before include "Ashes, perhaps?" , "Woods" , "Steer into the plants" , "Large plants" , "Elders perhaps" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish News.
