Crossword Genius

Writer of 'The Gilded God' (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

author

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'writer' is the definition.
(I know that author is a type of writer)

'gilded god' is the wordplay.
'gilded' becomes 'au' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'god' becomes 'Thor' (Norse god of thunder).
'au'+'thor'='AUTHOR'

'of the' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for author that I've seen before include "One writes" , "Source, writer" , "Ford, for example" , "Generator, writer" , "Creative artist" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
