Crossword Genius

Youngster of some pride (4,3)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

lion cub

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'some pride' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I don't see how they can define each other.

'youngster of' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'youngster' could be 'cub' (young bear) and 'cub' is found within the answer.
'of' could be 'o' and 'o' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'lin' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for lion cub that I've seen before include "Creature" , "Young mauler" , "Elsa's offspring possibly (Born Free)" , "Young big cat" , "beastly prince?" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
