Crossword Genius

A beach’s length? (6)

Ross

I think it could be either:

margin

strand

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This clue might be a double definition.

'a beach's' is the first definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'length?' is the second definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't understand how one could define the other.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for strand that I've seen before include "Drive aground on shore" , "Abandon on the seashore" , "Ringlet or stretch of beach" , "Beach; London road" , "Stretch of sand" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times and The Sunday Times.
