Crossword Genius

Actresses are put upon by her (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

dresser

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'actresses are' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot understand how one could define the other.

'upon by her' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'her' could be 'dre' and 'dre' is found in the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'put' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for dresser that I've seen before include "clotheshorse?" , "Sideboard - backstage assistant" , "Item of bedroom furniture" , "employed off stage" , "Item of furniture with shelves and drawers" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
