Crossword Genius

Acumen for us French (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

nous

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'french' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't understand how they can define each other.

'acumen for us' is the wordplay.
'acumen for' becomes 'no' (I am not sure about this - if you are sure you should believe this answer much more).
'no'+'us'='NOUS'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for nous that I've seen before include "Gumption" , "Abroad we" , "we recognised in Nancy" , "Common-sense" , "Common sense: mind or reason" .)

I've seen this clue in The Sun.
