Crossword Genius

Best piece of fiction to discuss? (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

topic

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'best piece of fiction' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot understand how they can define each other.

'to discuss?' is the wordplay.
'discuss?' becomes 'pic' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'to'+'pic'='TOPIC'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for topic that I've seen before include "one discussed" , "'Theme, subject (5)'" , "Content of argument" , "Theme of discourse" , "Theme (of, eg, a talk)" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
