Ross

I believe the answer is:

genetics

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'not potentially adroit for development' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't understand how one could define the other.

'calamitous stage direction' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'direction' could be 'ene' (ENE is an example) and 'ene' is found within the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for genetics that I've seen before include "The scientific study of heredity" , "The study of biological heredity" , "Science of heredity" , "Study of inherited characteristics" , "Branch of biology" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
