Crossword Genius

Earth, say, putting energy into growth in garden (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

planet

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'earth say' is the definition.
(Earth is an example)

'energy into growth in garden' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'energy' could be 'e' (physics symbol as in E=mc2) and 'e' is present in the answer.
'growth' could be 'plant' (as in plant growth) and 'plant' is located in the remaining letters.
No letters remain.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

'putting' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for planet that I've seen before include "Is Pluto one?" , "Eg, Mars or Pluto" , "Celestial body that revolves around the sun" , "Sun's orbiter" , "World" .)

I've seen this clue in The Daily Mail.
