Crossword Genius

Explode with hesitation, put out (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

erupt

'explode' is the definition.
(I know that erupt is a more specific form of the action explode)

'with hesitation put out' is the wordplay.
'with' is an insertion indicator.
'hesitation' becomes 'er' (sound made while hesitating - um, er).
'out' is an anagram indicator (out can mean wrong or inaccurate).
'put' with letters rearranged gives 'upt'.
'er' put within 'upt' is 'ERUPT'.

(Other definitions for erupt that I've seen before include "suddenly burst out" , "Burst forth, like 25" , "spout" , "Break through (as a volcano)" , "Spurt lava" .)

I've seen this clue in The Mirror.
