Crossword Genius

Frank, Roy, Wendy going west touring an eastern state (3,4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

new york

'an eastern state' is the definition.

'frank roy wendy going west touring' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
an anagram of 'roy' is 'yor' which is located in the answer.
'west' could be 'w' ('W' can be a synonym of 'west') and 'w' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'nek' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

(Other definitions for new york that I've seen before include "major city" , "US state, one of the original 13" , "Worn key (anag.)" , "Great city called the Big Apple" , "''So good they named it twice'', in short" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
