Crossword Genius

Gunston abandoned son, putting little bed in cellulose nitrate laced with nitrogen (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

guncotton

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'nitrogen' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both substances as well as being singular nouns.
Perhaps they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'gunston abandoned son putting little bed in cellulose nitrate laced' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'bed' could be 'cot' (cot is a kind of bed) and 'cot' is located in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'with' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Another definition for guncotton that I've seen is " Type of explosive".)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
