Ross

I believe the answer is:

bun

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'hairy thing' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot see how one could define the other.

I don't understand how the rest of the clue works.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for bun that I've seen before include "Small rounded bread or cake" , "Something from Bath or Chelsea" , "Small cake; hair style" , "Hairstyle, cake" , "Small cake - tied-up hair" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
