Ross

I believe the answer is:

secrete

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'hide' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'southeast of an island' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'southeast' could be 'se' (synonyms) and 'se' is present in the answer.
'island' could be 'crete' (Greek island) and 'crete' is found within the answer.
No letters remain.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'in the' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for secrete that I've seen before include "squirrel" , "Place out of sight, hide" , "Hide or conceal an object" , "harbour" , "Form substance for use within body, as liver does bile" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
